Previous Entry Share Next Entry

The Seasteading Institute has announced the first annual seasteading conference. It will be held October 10th, 2008 at the Embassy Suites in Burlingame, CA. The cost is $195.00, which includes food, but not a hotel room.

This will be a working conference. As the wiki states:

This is not a “sit around and listen to a few presenters” sort of conference. Instead, we’re going to have a bunch of small workshops where groups brainstorm about solutions to some of the challenges we face, research those solutions, and come up w/ recommendations. If there is a particular area that you’d like to lead a workshop / session on, please note it. Also feel free to add workshop topics.

In my opinion, seasteading represents the single best strategy for increasing human freedom in the near term future. So if you’d like to help make it happen, come join us! And please spread the word to any group that you think would be interested.

I disagree for only one reason.

If you are seasteading and you piss off a government, your bodies will never be found. It's a mighty big ocean out there.

That's true now, though, isn't it? Land-based governments seem to be pretty good at making people disappear if they choose to do so.

In the long term, I expect to see seasteads develop their own defense forces.
