As some of you may recall, on May 5th, 2004, I made a commitment to:

a. reduce my body fat percentage to around 5%
b. build upper body strength such that I can do 20 consecutive pull-ups
c. build my lower body strength such that I can squat 200 lbs.
I also promised:
On January 15, 2005, I will post nude photos of myself to this blog. Full body. Good lighting. Front, back, and side.
So how did I do?

I failed utterly.

And, to my shame, I chickened out on publishing the pictures.

(Several of you asked about them, including kitiara, ladykalana, gustavolacerda and others. My thanks to you for holding me to my promise. Please see the next post (NSFW) for my efforts to fulfill my promise as best as I can now.)

How I plan to blackmail myselfCollapse )

I had read an article recently where someone bet $500 to lose a certain amount of weight by a set date. Suddenly he'd find himself asking if that cheesecake was going to taste good enough to be worth $500. He hit his weight loss goal after years of not getting anywhere with his diet/exercise plans. I like how you add an additional sting by donating the money to a group you don't like. I saw an alarm clock that does the same thing with trying to get you to stop using the snooze alarm. Every time you hit snooze, it donates money to a group you don't like.

5%?

(Link)
Is that 5% a typo? 5% is way up in the hairy edge, 15% is in the comfortably fit range. I've been running the latter of late, when I fall below 13% I get ravenously hungry.

The two things that helped me go from 205 lbs or so at my peak to holding 150-155 is training myself that it's good to always be a little bit hungry, and going through a period where I assuaged my hunger with large quantities of water (and tried to stick to 1200 calories/day, which I think I did mostly).

Aaaand, get yourself a fancy-dancy scale with the impedance measuring of body fat, and weigh yourself every single freakin' morning. Probably be a good idea to log that data, too.

Good on ya, and good luck!

Yeah, 5% body fat was a little too ambitious. :>

I agree, I think it's a good idea to always be a little hungry. I know that whenever, I've lost weight before, that's how I've felt.

I have a Tanita scale. As soon as I can find the manual to program it, I'm going to start logging body fat %. The absolute accuracy may not be that great, but it should do okay at measuring changes.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I added you today... don't know why you added me originally, but every once in a while I had checked out some of your public posts and more recently have checked back in on those who have added me out of the blue... I'm guessing it may have had to do with some of the shared fitness stuff mentioned in Jay's journal... so now you're on my fitness and firearms filters as a like minded sort of individual :)

I am amazed at what people will post in their journals both publicly and semi-privately to random friends that may or may not have ever been met in person... and admire you for your courage in doing so... I am glad to read about your motivations and finding a plan that should work well or at least much better for you than the one set in 2004. More later... I have a post brewing in my head about motivations... just need to find make time to write it. :)

Thanks! Yes, I probably added you because you posted something interesting on someone else's journal. I look forward to reading your post about motivation!
