What is a FirstDay Cottage?

A house kit which a pair can build in approximately fifteen weekends.

A customized home design to fit the customer's specific needs.

A system of construction that requires almost no carpentry experience.

A project that can be completed for $40,000.

An elegant and durable home.

Those are really pretty, and seem so great. It's a shame that it's $1.50 per mile outside of their area, as adding the mileage of coming to atlanta onto that makes it not so affordable.
But, damn, I love the idea.

Shipping costs do increase the cost, but it doesn't seem like it would price out someone who would be able to afford one of these in the first place. According to Yahoo, Walpole, NH is about 1110 miles from Atlanta, GA:

http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?ed=xTowJeV.wimQQVd6MsEKU7USFw--&csz=Walpole%2C+NH&country=us&tcsz=Atlanta%2C+GA&tcountry=us

At $1.50/mile that works out to be ~$1700.

The least expensive kit costs:

$23,040

so the total cost would be:

$23,040
+ $1665
========
$24,705

At 960 sq. ft, that works out to be about $25.75/sq. ft. vs. $24.00/sq. ft if you were local to Walpole. Assuming you were able to save $1000 month toward the cost of purchasing one of these homes, the shipping cost would add an extra two months to your wait.
