11:23 am - Airships: a second age

via telegraph.co.uk

"Whatever you want to call it, the new technology has just won the company (or rather, their US defence contractor ally Northrop Grumman) a contract with the United States Department of Defence to the tune of half a billion dollars. In just 12 months the team at Cardington must build a 300ft-long surveillance vehicle capable of staying airborne for 21 days at a time. It will be known as the LEMV (Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle).

The LEMV will hover above Afghanistan at 20,000ft, equipped with the sort of super-powerful cameras that can read a signature on a letter from four miles away. It will be, Taylor says, ‘an unblinking eye’, recording every move made on the ground. In theory, no one will be able to plant a roadside bomb – a device which has claimed the lives of so many British soldiers – without the cameras seeing who did it and, more importantly, where they came from. And, if the LEMV is a success, it could prove to be a tipping point, ushering in a new age of airships. "

02:50 pm - Bicycle repair training?

Anyone have any recommendations for bike repair persons? Ideally, I'd find someone who could show me what needs to be done, help me source parts and tools, but would let me do the work myself. Proximity to Mountain View is a bonus, but I'm open to anyone in the Bay Area.

"I used Montana Gold Acrylic Spray Paint. And after researching I decided to take the top coat off of the leather with finger nail polish remover so the paint would set into the leather a little better. Acetone was actually recommended but I'm lazy like that so I went with what I had on hand. I tested the polish remover on the inner zipper area first to make sure there would be no major color shift in the leather. So far the paint seems pretty solid. No cracks or flaking at all. I washed the boots (as recommended by Commander) with soap and water to try to remove some of the remaining sticky residue and when that didn't work I rubbed them down with Olive Oil...totally worked! The paint showed no signs of rubbing off or flaking with either of these treatments. "

11:39 pm - Carhartt corset

"Finally, I wanted the corset to be as beautiful as it was functional. For this, I specifically chose quality Occidental Leather tool holsters which compliment the design of the corset. This juxtaposition of reinforced feminine curves and sturdy sensibility was exactly what I wanted in a haute couture work garment. In addition, the cherry leather and hand-dyed laces to match are the perfect compliment to the classic Carhartt carmel brown."
