01:50 pm - Norman Borlaug - American Hero
When you think of the word "hero", most people probably think of movie stars -- Bruce Willis, maybe, or Harrison Ford. Norman Borlaug's face (above) probably doesn't come to mind. Yet Borlaug, an agronomist, has been instrumental in preventing hundreds of millions of deaths by starvation. From the 40's to the present, he has developed and promoted new high-yielding hybrids of wheat, corn, and rye. The new hybrids increased crop yields by 60%, allowing countries like India and Pakistan to feed their rapidly growing populations.
Norman Borlaug turned 91 years old yesterday, and I think it's fitting to celebrate. Check out this Easterbrook article below for more about the man and his life.
