For the first time in months, Richard Hahn is happy to be a doctor. In a ramshackle compound of cinderblock buildings near the western border of Thailand, the Southern California surgeon watches intently as his protégé medics treat a 20-year-old land-mine victim. He leans in for a closer look at what remains of the man's left leg—a gruesome tangle of flesh and bone sheared off mid-calf.
