September 26, 2002 -- Matthew Hranke, a New York photographer, expects his new house to materialize the way his mail-order deliveries do: on the back of a truck.
He and his wife, Yolande, bought 130 acres in Mileses, a tiny hamlet in Sullivan County, New York. "After 9/11, we thought maybe we should get a house sooner rather than later," he said. "But we had no idea of what we should do." Their budget was $150,000.
Sound impossible? Mr. Hranek thought so, too, until he remembered a prefab town house he had seen displayed at the Milan furniture fair two years ago. It was beautifully designed, as he recalled, with simple Modernist lines and an intelligent layout. "It was very cool," he said.
