Conservatives: you may be less "integratively complex" but that doesn't mean you're simple-minded

Researchers help define what makes a political conservative
By Kathleen Maclay, Media Relations | 22 July 2003

A few choice excerpts:

"...liberals appear to have a higher tolerance for change than conservatives do..."

Yeah, right. Just try tipping liberal sacred cows, like public schools, or Social Security. And do they really think that the words "conservative" or "liberal" mean much? So-called liberal greens and feminists are getting into bed with religious conservatives over issues like immigration, pornography, and genetic engineering.

"...Disparate conservatives share a resistance to change and acceptance of inequality, the authors said. Hitler, Mussolini, and former President Ronald Reagan were individuals, but all were right-wing conservatives because they preached a return to an idealized past and condoned inequality in some form. Talk host Rush Limbaugh can be described the same way...Glaser acknowledged that the team's exclusive assessment of the psychological motivations of political conservatism might be viewed as a partisan exercise..."

Lump Reagan and Limbaugh with Hitler and Mussolini? Seems fair. Yet, something niggles my public-school educated brain. Oh yeah! The gassing of 6+ million Jews. But I suppose that's a minor quibble really.
