I don't care for blow molded tool cases that most retail power tools ship with. My preference would be for foam padded (like the foam on back pack handles), zippered pouches, with backpack style handles.

I would also like tool rolls that consisted of a large sheet of cordura fabric covered with a big sheet of velcro (loop side). The tools would be held in individually sized cordura sheaths/pouches with velcro (hook side) on the back. You could then mix and match tools on the tool roll, swap in the tools that you use frequently, swap out the tools that you don't. And since they're attached with velcro, you could move them around to use the space more efficiently.

I have a cordless drill that came in its own case, and I can never figure out how to pack the damn thing back up. I totally can't tell where anything goes.

Given it's a hard shell, the least they could do is make it obvious how it should go in. There's a competitive opportunity here I wager.

My Craftsman cordless drill came in a tough Cordura nylon zip bag with elastic-gathered pouches for bits, spare battery, charger, etc. I like it a whole lot better than the old one I had in the blow-molded case. I can cram a lot more tools into it if I have to, and it came with a shoulder strap, too. Not padded, but still better than its predecessor.

The drill is pretty sweet, too. I've found a lot of cool stuff has gotten cheaper lately, if you can stomach doing business with the Chinese. :/

When I recently went shopping for a set of wrenches, I specifically had in mind one that came ina roll up pouch, each wrench with its own sleeve.
What I ended up getting is a molded plastic form that I have to cram my fingers in to pry a wrench out. I am very disappointed.
I like the cordura idea, maybe you should develop a pattern for basic tools, etc.
Have you seen the tool bags in the Duluth catalog http://www.duluthtrading.com
