08:13 pm - Custom backpack tailor?

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

Dear Lazyweb,

Can anyone recommend a custom backpack tailor? (i.e. Someone capable of sewing cordura?)

Thanks!

Chris

What a fascinating idea!
I'm in Beijing, of course, and you can get anything tailor-made, if you show them a pattern (like for instance an LL Bean catalog... or an IKEA catalog for that matter). I've been trying to find a good place to get tailor-made shoes. But a tailored backpack... what a concept. I'd say "send me your measurements and I'll get one done for you here" but I don't know what measurements one would take.

Nifty. Any idea how much it would cost to ship say, a blanket from Beijing?

I guess between ten and twenty dollars, rough estimate there.

Thanks! That backpack looks quite nice. However, I'm planning to have the would-be tailor make a custom automobile divider out of cordura. There's not much call for making custom automobile dividers. But I figure that if they can sew a backpack, they can make the divider.

If he is still doing it, Rust Pond Workshop, Alton, NH

He works in canvas mainly (this is all 20 year old data, he may be out of the biz) this stuff looks very canvas like. If it's still the same person, his last name should be Hoops.

Buying his work, is buying a bag for life. I have a bag he made me 20+ years ago.

Cobbler.

If you have the plan you can sometimes get cobblers to sew through really heavy stuff.

We take our straps to the cobbler to bar tack on our homemade backpacks, we use our machine for all of the little stuff and get them to finish up.

Hello Chris! Wendee S. here from J-Town. Blast from the past. I just registered for LiveJournal so I could comment on a friend's journal. I did a high school search (after they asked me for my info) and came across your profile. HOW ARE YOU? Raleigh, eh? I'll have to be voyeuristic and peruse your site to find out what you're up to in Raleigh. Or you can tell me yourself... dadsmonkeyshine AT hotmail DOT com. I hope all is well with you and I hope to hear from you!

Hi Wendee! Thanks for the note. I don't post much personal stuff to my LJ anymore -- mostly it's a collection of rants and amusing things I find on the internet. I'll check out your blog.

Why not do the sewing yourself?

Anyway, there's a customizable thingie here: timbuk2.com, but they're mostly messenger bags.

Thanks! As for why I don't do it myself, lack of space, division of labor, that sort of thing.

You should nudge this fellow, he's got a nice customized laptop bag.
